Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is actually like the Nile where water flows but Bwindi is the source where gorillas flow being the Park where half of the remaining Mountain gorillas in the world are. We are introducing to you the second best gorilla trekking sector after Buhoma sector which is the Ruhija sector. Ruhija is found in the Eastern part of the forest and it’s easily accessed from either Kabale or Buhoma. It’s a habitat of a good number of mountain gorillas.
Ruhija sector has 3 gorilla families and among them is Bitukura family, Oruzogo family and Kyaguriro family which is especially reserved for research and habituated for gorilla tourism. Ruhija is the best for ecotourism experience because it has fewer gorillas compared to the Buhoma sector. Also Ruhija is best for elderly travelers who are interested in gorilla trekking because of its terrain that’s not so much hilly compared to Rushaga and Nkuringo sector. Kyaguliro gorilla family is mainly for research therefore this leaves only 2 families for trekking meaning only 16 gorilla permits are issued per day in the Ruhija sector. Sometimes the research group is also trekked if you formally ask permission from Uganda Wildlife Authority and only 6 people instead of 8 people are allowed to track the Kyaguliro research Group.
Ruhija can be accessed from several angels. If you are coming from Kampala/Entebbe, it’s better to path through Kabale town and then proceed to Ruhija. You can as well come from Kampala, branch off from Ntungamo to Rukungiri, Kihihi, Butogota then drive another two hours to Ruhija. All these routes require a four wheel drive car as some sections of the road is rough, bumpy, and dusty so during rainy seasons, they tend to get muddy. For those interested in Flying in for Gorilla trekking, there no direct flights scheduled to Ruhija so the only option is to fly via Kihihi ideally at the Buhoma side and then drive for 2 hours to Ruhija. You can as well land in Kabale town and then drive to Ruhija. Flights remain tricky for Ruhija but we wait to see in the near future what will happen.
Activities carried out in the Ruhija sector
The fact that your journey to Ruhija takes you to Kable, you will have chances of spotting the Virunga volcanoes of Muhavura, Sabinyo and Mgahinga while standing at a Vantage point. If you choose to stay in Bunyonyi where Lake Bunyonyi is the deepest Lake in Uganda formed as a result of Lava Damning. It is one of the stable lakes in Uganda as it has very few waves due to the fact that it is surrounded by hills. You can take a canoe ride on Lake Bunyonyi to visit the nearby islands and also view floating islands that do exist on this Lake. The fact that this Lake is Bilhazia free, you can take a swim. The Lake Bunyonyi is a Rukiga word which means, ”small Birds” and thus Lake Bunyonyi is popular for Birds so Bird watchers here you are.
