The well planned 7 Days Rwanda Gorillas & Primates Safari itinerary gives you an adventure experience of Rwanda's rare primates and the hidden treasures of Rwanda. The safari starts in Kigali City and takes your to the Chimpanzee trails of Nyungwe Forest National Park, a vast montane forest found in the South West of Rwanda. This natural forest is famous for its large groups of colobus monkeys, chimpanzees, butterflies and a rich variety of orchids. Your adventure continues to Volcanoes National Park, to track the elusive mountain gorillas. Appreciate the beauty of this gigantic tropical rain forest of Virunga. End with a tour around Kigali; visit the Genocide memorial at Gisozi and the Rwanda National Museum. After the release of the feature film, Gorillas in the Mist, about the late Dian Fossey’s pioneering work habituating the gorillas, interest in gorilla trekking reached new heights.

Tour Itinerary

Day 01: Arrival in Kigali

On arrival in Kigali you will be met our representative and transferred to your hotel. Depending on your arrival time you may be able to visit some of Kigali’s craft markets to browse amongst the pottery, carvings, batik, weaving, sculpture, musical instruments, leather and fabrics on offer. Prepare to use your haggling skills!

Day 02: Nyungwe Forest Reserve

Kick off the Rwanda Gorillas safari wildlife adventure with a road trip to Nyungwe Forest Reserve, stopping en route for lunch in Butare Town. This drive takes about 5 hours. Make stops at local markets, the traditional palace in Nyanza. Continue to Butare, visit the Botanical Gardens and the cultural museum. Pass through green fields of tea scattered across the hillsides and the small unique wooden houses surrounding Nyungwe Forest, on arrival check into the lodge for an overnight.

Day 03: Chimpanzee tracking- Nyungwe Forest

In the morning you will meet your Rwanda Gorillas private driver/guide and you will set off towards the famous Nyungwe Forest, one of the largest forests in East and Central Africa. Enjoy a chimp trek where you will visit some of the habituated troops of chimps. You will be mesmerized as you watch them as they swing from tree to tree, branch to branch and the little ones feeding on fruits or hiding behind their mothers. Follow them from nest to nest till you have had your full. You may also see L’Hoests’s monkeys, silver monkeys, vervet monkeys, olive baboons, blue monkeys, golden monkeys and red-tailed monkeys. In the afternoon you can go for East Africa’s only canopy walk. This walk takes place above a deep gorge cutting across the massive forest. Lasting about 1½ hours, the walk takes you through some beautiful foliage and animal habitats. En route you will have the chance to spot blue monkeys and unique birds that dwell in the upper levels of the forest canopy. Later return to the lodge for an overnight.

Day 04: Lake Kivu

After breakfast you will leave for Kibuye, passing through the green fields of tea plantations before exploring the shores of Lake Kivu. Enjoy the stunningly beautiful views from Lake Kivu up to Gisenyi; beautiful countryside with valleys full of agricultural farms. Kibuye is the most beautiful of all the three resort towns on Lake Kivu. After relax at the shores of Lake Kivu. Take a boat out on the lake to see the various islands. Swim in the refreshing waters or stroll to the nearby villages rambling across a number of hills.

Day 05: Musanze-Volcanoes National Park

This morning you will depart with your Rwanda Gorillas driver for Volcanoes National Park. The drive will take you across the beautiful Rwandan countryside. En-route you will visit the Ross Carr’s Imbabazi Orphanage. Imbabazi Orphanage was founded by Mrs Rosamond Halsey Carr in late 1994 at Mugongo to care for the genocide orphans. She witnessed all Rwanda's historical events, including the gruesome genocide of 1994. She is the author of “Land of a Thousand Hills: my life in Rwanda.” Later take a stroll on the lake and also visit other local villages. After lunch drive to Ruhengeri at the foothills of Virunga Volcanoes and the base for Gorilla. The town itself, located only 25km from Uganda boarder, is relatively a small city of about 70,000 people. The constant flow of humanity is quite remarkable. The Town has great views of the surrounding volcanoes.

Day 6: Gorilla Trekking – Volcanoes National Park

Today you set off for gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park. Ascending the slopes of the Virungas, you will be immersed in the dense, lush rainforest. The vibrant birdcalls and squabbles of the golden monkeys will eventually bring you to Rwanda Gorillas in their natural habitat. Starring into the eyes of these gentle giants is a truly once in a lifetime experience.

Returning in the afternoon you can go for the optional Ibyiwatu Cultural group performance, where you will be entertained, and learn more about Rwandan culture, music, dance, and drama. Or take a visit to the twin lakes before returning to the lodge in the evening.

Day 7: Kigali

With an early breakfast, drive back to Kigali. Enjoy a tour of Kigali city to visit the Gisozi genocide site, the Rwanda National Museum visit. The city offers its fair share of colourful African bustle and energy, but on the whole is very clean and orderly when compared to most African capitals, and its wide, tree-lined streets are a pleasant place to take a stroll., the time to be spent in these places depends on you departure flight.
