About the Kibale National Park

The Kibale National Park is one of the national parks in Uganda that displays the country’s heritage. The Kibale park, which was officially opened in 1993, was meant to be a place where chimpanzees could stay protected. And over time, this park has grown to be a home where chimps can flourish. In the park, Chimpanzee habituation and trekking happens to be the main activities. Although there are other fun-filled activities that the park promises tourists.

This park sits on a land area of about 776 square kilometers, and it is also located at an altitude of 1,200 – 1,600 meters. The Kibale park is made up of 2 different types of forest, which are the lowland and pre-montane forest, and this enables the park to provide accommodation for different creatures of numerous species.

Regardless of the fact that the Kibale park was initially built for chimpanzee habituation, it has also grown to be a habitat for other animals. The park provides accommodation for over 375 species of birds and even a total of 70 mammal species, mainly 13 species of primate, including the chimpanzee. As such, the park is a perfect destination for tourists who enjoy primates, and it would allow tourists to enjoy nature to the fullest.

Activities to engage in at the Kibale National Park

Chimpanzee Trekking and Habituation

The Kibale forest happens to be rated as the best location for Chimpanzee trekking in entire East Africa. There are several Chimpanzee groups to track while in the Kibale forest. Also, tourists can spend almost the whole day watching these chimpanzees, and it is referred to as chimpanzee habituation. One good thing about chimpanzee habituation in the Kibale forest is that during this period, tourists can also get to see other primates and birds.

The chimpanzee habituation experience, otherwise known as CHEX, is the primary activity tourists engage in.

Hiking and Nocturnal walks

Exploring the beautiful Kibale forest can be an exciting experience for tourists. Tourists can engage in a different type of hikes based on duration. Some hikes can last for half a day, while some can run for almost the entire day.

Also, for individuals who enjoy night walks, there are rangers to guide tourists on how to go about it. This night walk can last for up to 2 hours. During this night walk, animals such as potto, bushbaby, nightjar, cricket, and tree hyrax can be seen.

Birding

As early as 7 am, tourists can start bird tours in the Kibale park. During this bird tour, tourists get to see rare bird species such as Papyrus Gonolek, White-winged Warbler, White-collared Olive back, and Papyrus Canary. Other beautiful bird species to see are White-spotted Flufftail, Yellow-spotted Barbet, Hairy-breasted Barbet, Yellow-billed Barbet, Western Nicator, Grey-winged Robin-chat, White-tailed Ant-thrush, Brown-backed Scrub-robin, Black-and-white Shrike-flycatcher, Brown-throated Wattle-eye, Superb Sunbird, Brown-crowned Tchagra, Bocage’s Bush-shrike, Black Bishop, White-breasted Negrofinch and Black-crowned Waxbill.

Cultural experience

Another exciting activity tourist engages in while at the Kibale national park has to do with the culture of the inhabitants of the Kibale area. Tourists can get to stop by the neighboring villages to see and learn some of the cultural values of the people.

 

There is no dull moment in the Kibale national park. Also, there is enough quality accommodation that can make tourists feel relaxed and enjoy their vacation.
